Weber Overture, Der Freischütz
Haydn Symphony No.73 'La chasse'
Mahler Symphony No.1
Sir Mark Elder conductor
The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder return to Cheltenham Town Hall for a performance of Weber's Der Freischütz Overture which premiered in 1821 and became an immediate hit, becoming one of the most popular pieces in the concert hall repertoire. It is followed by a Haydn Symphony whose finale reflects the excitement of the chase. After the interval Sir Mark conducts Mahler’s First Symphony. This remarkable work begins with bird-calls and distant military fanfares before proceeding via a wonderfully rustic Ländler and an evocation of a Jewish funeral to its inspirational, life-affirming conclusion. A worthy culmination to the Cheltenham Concert Series.
