John Williams - A life in cinema

The programme includes music from:

  • Jaws
  • Star War
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • JFK
  • Schindler’s List
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
  • Born on the Fourth of July
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Jurassic Park
  • E.T. and many more!
  • Stephen Bell conductor

‘John is much more of a chameleon as a composer, he reinvents himself with every picture.’ So says Steven Spielberg. No-one can match Williams’ ability to evoke the essence of a movie; the pain of Schindler’s List, the poignancy of Saving Private Ryan, the sheer adventure of Indiana Jones or the innocent, unbelievable excitement of E.T.. Every score tonight is from a great movie, made even greater by extraordinary music.

We invite you to share an evening that commemorates the events of a hundred years ago. Many of the Hallé’s members went off to fight and now, through the voice – and voices – of the orchestra, we will evoke the spirit of the age leading up to and into the conflict of 1914–18. The concert will feature pieces composed by combatants, casualties and contemporaries from all sides, including music by Gustav Holst, Franz Lehár, Maurice Ravel, Richard Strauss, Edward Elgar, George Butterworth, Ralph Vaughan Williams and others.

  • Ravel Boléro
  • Glinka Jota Aragonesa
  • Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez
  • Stephen Bell conductor | Craig Ogden guitar

‘The Concierto de Aranjuez is so familiar that it is easy to forget just how daring it is … Rodrigo never even learned to play the guitar, because an understanding of the difficulties ‘might interfere with my fantasy’. Rodrigo’s fantasy allowed him to compose one of the most popular concertos written this century, which he likened to the ‘hidden breeze that stirs the treetops in the parks’, but it remains a formidable challenge. The soloist must switch effortlessly from bristling chords to finely spun melodic lines ... Here, the result is about as good as you could expect anywhere.’ BBC Music Magazine reviewing Craig Ogden’s recording of the Concierto.
