Exotic is Ravel’s magically evocative song cycle Shéhérazade, a superbly orchestrated setting of three poems by the composer’s friend Tristan Klingsor. Then to Eastern Europe for Janácek’s homage to the fictional Cossack leader Taras Bulba. What the composer called his ‘musical testimony’ to the courage of the Slavic people is suitably heroic and builds to a majestic climax, organ and brass combining to magnificent effect. Vaughan Williams's picturesque portrait of England's capital and its characterful inhabitants starts the evening.
