Hallé: Collection Series - Handel, Messiah

Hallé: Collection Series - Handel, Messiah

Handel Messiah 135'

Nicholas Kraemer conductor* | Mhairi Lawson soprano
Madeleine Shaw mezzo soprano | Benjamin Hulett tenor | Derek Welton baritone
Hallé Choir

It’s the time of year for Handel’s perennially-popular choral classic, Messiah, and who better to conduct it than Nicholas Kraemer, a conductor who is equally at home in front of modern and period orchestras? Beginning with the sublime strains of ‘Comfort Ye’ and culminating in the majesty of its concluding ‘Amen’, the work simply cannot fail to enrich, inspire and entertain.

A stellar cast of soloists and the Hallé Choir are sure to be in fine voice for the occasion, so why not make it a very special part of your lead up to Christmas?

*The Hallé Concerts Society is very grateful to Nicholas Kraemer for replacing Christian Curnyn who has had to withdraw.

Hallé: Opus One Series - The Nutcracker: complete concert performance

Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker: complete concert performance 86'

Andrew Gourlay conductor

‘Astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original’ was how one contemporary judged Tchaikovsky’s enchanting seasonal ballet, The Nutcracker. In these concerts Andrew Gourlay and the Hallé give an early Christmas treat by performing this masterly score in its glorious entirety.

And what a treat it promises to be. From its wonderfully bustling opening bars to the ‘Waltz of the Flowers’, the ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ and its magnificent finale, we travel to the Kingdom of Sweets and back. A musical journey you’ll never forget. There might be a more magical way to build up to Christmas, but we can’t think of one!

This programme is also being performed at The Bridgewater Hall on Thursday 11 December (7.30pm) and Sunday 14 December (7.30pm).

Hallé Youth Orchestra

Elgar Overture: Cockaigne (In London Town) 15'
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 34'
Grieg Two Elegiac Melodies 9'
Nielsen Symphony No.2, 'The Four Temperaments' 32'

Jamie Phillips conductor | Nicolas Namoradze piano

High-flying Georgian pianist Nicolas Namoradze joins Jamie Phillips and the Hallé Youth Orchestra for Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto, a work of abundant lyricism that was used as the emotive musical backdrop to David Lean’s classic film Brief Encounter.

The concert opens with Elgar’s captivating musical picture of our capital city, Cockaigne, while Grieg’s Two Elegiac Melodies sumptuously showcase the orchestra’s outstanding string section. Finally, Nielsen’s splendid Second Symphony. The work was inspired by a painting on a pub wall titled ‘The Four Temperaments’. Each movement corresponds to one of the medieval humours (choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic and sanguine) which together were believed to make up the human personality. Fascinating stuff.
