Who sings in the Hallé Choir?

The Hallé Choir is made up of around one hundred and fifty singers from all walks of life, and all across the North West region.

Where and when are rehearsals held?

Rehearsals are held 6.45-9.15pm every Wednesday evening in Manchester, with additional rehearsals scheduled prior to each concert. Concerts are planned many months in advance and a detailed rehearsal schedule is provided at least 2 months in advance.

What is the commitment involved in being a member?

We expect an 80% minimum attendance from our members, for each concert and overall during the season. We have an option of a 'leave of absence' period of a few months if necessary for any reason, without the need to reaudition to rejoin.

How do I join?

Membership is by audition. We hold auditions throughout the season for prospective new members.

When are the next audition dates?

We have a rolling programme of auditions throughout the season. The next audition date has not yet been set. If you would like to register your interest for an audition or for further information, please contact the Hallé Choir at enquiries@hallechoir.co.uk or on the telephone answering service on 0845 1080 122.

What would I have to do for an audition?

Auditions last around 10 minutes, and you would be asked to sing:
• A piece of your own choice lasting no more than 3 minutes. This should be a piece that you know well and feel confident singing, and can be either a solo piece or part of a choral work. We will provide an accompanist for you.
• Vocal range exercises, ear and responsiveness tests
• A short piece of accompanied sight reading

What does membership cost?

There is an annual membership subscription – currently £12 per month (£6 for concessions). All other costs such as vocal coaching, rehearsal, concert and music costs are provided.

Do I need to be able to read music?

As we have a limited amount of rehearsal time for each project, it is necessary for all Choir members to be able to read music.

May I observe or sing in a rehearsal before I audition?

We strongly encourage prospective new members to attend a rehearsal, either to observe or sing with the Choir, and thereby experience the Choir before deciding whether or not to audition
