The Hallé Youth Orchestra recruits once per year, usually towards the end of the spring term, holding auditions during the summer. However, if you play an ‘endangered species’ instrument (such as bassoon, lower brass, double bass, French horn or percussion) please contact us at any time during the year to enquire whether we have any vacancies.
We are looking for young people who:
- are aged between 13 and 19 on 1st September 2012
- play an orchestral instrument to Associated Board grade 6 standard or above
- love orchestral music and the excitement of contributing to a large orchestra
Membership
Membership of the Hallé Youth Orchestra is free, however members are expected to contribute towards the cost of residential courses and tours where appropriate. Limited bursaries are available through an application process to help cover the costs of residential courses, tours and travel to rehearsals and concerts.
Youth Orchestra members are expected to commit to rehearsals on Sunday afternoons during term-time in Manchester from September 2012 and a residential course and/or tour during the summer holidays of 2013. There are no activities during the study leave period of May and June.
Full Membership
Full Membership is for outstanding young musicians of Associated Board grade 8 standard or equivalent. Full Members take part in rehearsals and concerts during term-time and in other training activities including residential courses and tours.
Associate Membership
Associate Membership is for promising young musicians of Associated Board grade 6 standard or above. Associate Members will have the opportunity to participate in some of the Hallé Youth Orchestra’s activities.
How to join
Please complete and return the application form by Monday 2nd April 2012.
Those selected will be asked to attend an audition during August/September 2012.
Auditions are informal and limited to ten minutes. Applicants will be asked to prepare a short piece of their own choice and a set work. There will also be a brief sight-reading test. We will provide an accompanist.
Preference will be given to those not already in full time specialist musical education.
We look forward to hearing from you!
