For the 2017-18 season
Before some of the Hallé concerts, there are specially programmed events, which range from discussions focussing on an aspect of that evening’s programme to foyer performances.
Unless otherwise stated, the events start at 6:30pm and are free to concert ticket holders.
Thursday 5 October 2017 – Sir Mark Elder
Sir Mark Elder looks ahead at the Hallé’s thrilling Russian-inspired 2017–18 season and explores the evening’s programme of late 19th- and early 20th-century music that includes a performance of Stravinsky’s excitingly colourful The Firebird (in its complete 1910 version).

Join us for a music event in the foyer given by Ruth Owens (vocals and piano) from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) Popular Music course.
Saturday 28 October 2017, 5.45pm – Shostakovich: 24 Preludes Op.34
Setting the scene for the evening’s dramatic Beyond the Score® retelling of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.4, join three talented musicians from the RNCM School of Keyboard Studies in a performance of Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes Op.34.
Saturday 18 November 2017 – foyer performance
Join Hannah Rose (keyboard), Rhys Jiang (drums) and Dan Addison (bass guitar) from the RNCM Popular Music course for a jazz trio performance in the foyer.
Thursday 18 January 2018 – Sir Mark Elder and Gerard McBurney on Shostakovich
Sir Mark Elder is joined by long time Hallé collaborator and composer, Gerard McBurney as they discuss the evening’s all-Shostakovich programme, touching on the influence of literature and external influences on Shostakovich’s work.
Thursday 8 February 2018 – Peter Hill on Petrushka
Pianist, writer and broadcaster, Peter Hill introduces the evening’s programme exploring the ballet music of Petrushka, weaving its influence through the 20th-century musical landscape.
Saturday 10 March 2018 – Stephen Bell and Tom Redmond
Hallé Pops Associate Conductor, Stephen Bell, in lively conversation with Tom Redmond discussing topics including conducting, concert planning for Pops concerts and recording film scores.
Saturday 7 April 2018 – foyer performance
Tom Stott (vocals) and Jeremy Perez (piano) from the RNCM Popular Music course set the mood for the evening’s concert with a performance in the foyer.
Saturday 28 April 2018 – Petroc Trelawny and David Julyan in conversation
Radio and television broadcaster, Petroc Trelawny, is joined in conversation by film music composer David Julyan whose scores include (amongst many more) Memento and Insomnia.
Thursday 10 May 2018 – Music and Technology
Hallé Education Director, Steve Pickett, is joined by Peter Green from the Manchester University School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering to introduce the Hallé’s pioneering education and community projects including a presentation of the extraordinary Halléoojamaflipaphone!
