SIBELIUS: THE ORIGIN OF FIRE Sibelius The Origin of Fire 32' Sibelius Symphony No.3 in C 29' Sibelius Orchestral Songs: Ristilukki; Illalle; Var det en dröm 9' Sibelius Symphony No.1 in E minor 42'
Mark Elder conductor • Juha Uusitalo bass-baritone Gentlemen of the Hallé Choir • Gentlemen of the RNCM Chorus
Half a century after his death in 1957, Jean Sibelius remains the dominant icon of Finnish classical music and a great figure in global terms. Opening a four-concert survey of all Sibelius's symphonies, Mark Elder ends this concert with the bold First, which Sibelius wrote when he was in his early 30s and just emerging from the spell of Russian music - Tchaikovsky in particular. The Third Symphony, on the other hand, portrays a consummate mature artist at work. As in all these Sibelius programmes, there are some fascinating and unusual items, memorable gems. The mighty Finnish bass-baritone Juha Uusitalo joins the orchestra for three songs and for the quasi-operatic male-voice cantata, The Origin of Fire, based on an episode from Finnish mythology describing the darkness caused by the theft of the sun, moon and stars. |
