Schubert Symphony No.8 in B minor, 'Unfinished' 23' Britten Piano Concerto, Op.13 34' Schumann Symphony No.1 in B flat, 'Spring' 32'
Michael Schønwandt conductor • Steven Osborne piano *
The admired Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt conducts two symphonies from the fresh morning of Romanticism: Schubert's Eighth and, suiting the season, Schumann's 'Spring' Symphony. The 'Unfinished', although its two movements always seem quite enough, nevertheless leaves intriguing questions hanging in the air about what might have been. Schumann's First Symphony is a work blossoming with melody and bursting with an irresistible rhythmic energy. Separating these two works of the early 19th century is Britten's atmospheric and powerful Piano Concerto, a work that the young composer wrote in 1938 and revised after the war that is so darkly foreshadowed in the score.
