Verdi Requiem 87'
Mark Elder conductor • June Anderson soprano • Stephanie Blythe mezzo-soprano tenor tbc • Mikhail Petrenko bass • Hallé Choir • London Symphony Chorus
Mark Elder's prestige as an opera conductor draws an all-star cast to join him in Verdi's Requiem, a work the composer wrote with the theatricality of Aida still fresh in his mind. June Anderson is among the most distinguished high sopranos of today, 'at her best where other voices stop', while the American mezzo Stephanie Blythe has a peerless reputation for the warmth of her singing, is specially known for Verdi roles, and Mikhail Petrenko, from the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and known to Hallé audiences from his stunning performance of Rachmaninov's The Bells in 2005, maintains the great Russian bass tradition. With these singers, the Hallé Choir and London Symphony Chorus, an evening of breathtaking drama is assured. The tumultuous Dies Irae section of the Requiem has been used in many works of popular culture to depict scenes of catastrophe, warfare, apocalypse, horror and tragedy. |
