SIBELIUS: THE ORIGIN OF FIRE
Sibelius
Symphony No.4 in A minor     36'
Sibelius Oma Maa (Our Native Land)     14'
Sibelius Choral Songs     9'
Sibelius Symphony No.5 in E flat     31'

Mark Elder conductor • Hallé Choir

In another all-Sibelius programme, Mark Elder presents the two powerful works of the composer's middle years - intense, beautiful, terrifying and ultimately inevitable music. The Fourth is the harshest and most tempestuous work in the cycle, winning through to chastened conviction. The superb Fifth moves towards a triumphant finale that carries all before it. Tonight's rarities put the Hallé Choir centre-stage in some of the composer's large yet little-known output of choral music, including a set of unaccompanied songs. It joins the orchestra in the rapturous patriotic cantata Oma maa (Our Native Land), with its glowing musical picture of the Northern Lights.
