Handel's meditation on Christ's birth, passion and resurrection, Messiah - popular ever since it was first performed more than 250 years ago - virtually defines a particular sort of British religious impulse: tender but strong, rooted in confidence, human understanding, generosity and good cheer. All that and great tunes. Roy Goodman conducts a festive performance with outstanding soloists. Sophie Daneman and Michael George, both in the front rank of British Handelians today, are joined by the delightful young Croatian mezzo-soprano Renata Pokupic.
