Dvorák Overture: Carnival 9' Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor 30' Beethoven Symphony No.4 in B flat 36'
Rory Macdonald conductor • Alban Gerhardt cello
Elgar's Cello Concerto, his great song of farewell, is justly one of the most popular works in any cellist's repertoire. The outstanding German cellist Alban Gerhardt, a musician of passion and substance, made a tremendous impression when he played this concerto in our summer concerts three years ago. The Hallé's much praised Assistant Conductor Rory Macdonald, now in his second season with the orchestra, tackles Beethoven's marvellous, volcanic Fourth Symphony brimming with enchanting lyricism. Dvo?rák's boisterous Carnival overture sets the programme spinning joyously in its depiction of a rumbustious peasant fair offset by a picture of coolly tranquil Bohemian woods.
