Mozart Overture: Don Giovanni 7' Mozart Symphony No.38 in D, 'Prague' 22' Mahler Symphony No.4 in G 55'
Joseph Swensen conductor • Sally Matthews soprano
No city loved and honoured Mozart more than Prague, where his music was always a hit and he was a celebrity. The theatrical spirit of Don Giovanni, with which Mozart scored huge success in the Bohemian capital, hovers over his glorious, exhilarating 'Prague' Symphony. Mahler, who conducted the opera in Prague himself, aimed for Mozartian purity and his mellow Fourth Symphony comes nearest to capturing that crystalline clarity. From the jingling sleigh bells opening to the shining, childlike innocence of the mouth-watering finale, featuring here the radiant voice of Sally Matthews, the Symphony has attracted the title 'Heavenly'. But beware the sinister Scherzo, warned Mahler; with its bogeyman fiddler 'it is so uncanny that your hair may stand on end.'
