Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 in D minor 44' Beethoven Symphony No.7 in A 38'
Mark Elder conductor • Sunwook Kim piano
Endlessly rewarding, full of promise, the great classics always have new things to say and new questions to ask. Tonight's concert combines two of the greatest: Brahms's imposing First Piano Concerto and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony. And conducting them is Mark Elder, unequalled for the thoroughgoing and searching power of his interpretation of this repertoire. Beethoven's Seventh is an immense affirmation: 'The apotheosis of the dance,' Wagner called it. Brahms created this piano concerto on a monumental scale, demanding and inspiring for soloist and orchestra alike. The soloist is Sunwook Kim, winner of the 2006 Leeds International Piano Competition, who gave a superb performance of this work with Elder and the Hallé in the competition finals.
