Wagner Overture: Tannhäuser 14' Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3 in C minor 35' Brahms Symphony No.1 in C minor 46'
Stanislaw Skrowaczewski conductor • Martin Roscoe piano
Double helpings of central classics by Beethoven and Brahms are once more on the menu, as the orchestra's distinguished former Principal Conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski makes an eagerly anticipated return. This time the symphony is by Brahms - his big-spirited First, written after he had hesitated for 20 years, worrying if he could match Beethoven. It was with this symphony that Skrowaczewski made his memorable Hallé debut in the 1975-76 season. Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, in the same driving key of C minor, is played by one of today's most admired and well-liked pianists, Martin Roscoe. Wagner's stirring overture to Tannhäuser is simply a bonus.
