Glinka
Overture: A Life for the Tsar     10'     HALLÉ FIRST | BRITISH
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D     34'
Shostakovich Symphony No.1 in F minor     33'     HALLÉ FIRST | BRITISH

Mark Elder conductor • Alina Pogostkina violin

Russia figures large in this programme which opens with Glinka's exhilarating overture to his epoch-making 'patriotic heroic-tragic' opera. Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, one of his happiest works, brims with tunes of a song- and dance-like nature and here features the dazzling young Russian-German violinist Alina Pogostkina, who made a thrilling debut with the orchestra, in a starring role. And this special 150th-anniversary season ends with one of the most dramatic ever Hallé 'firsts': Shostakovich's First Symphony which, at its first English performance by the Hallé under Hamilton Harty, in 1931, launched the British public's fascination with the deeply personal musical expressions of this most enigmatic of Russian composers.
