Smetana The Bartered Bride: Overture, Polka and Furiant 13' Mahler Rückert-Lieder 21' Dvorák Symphony No.6 in D 40'
Mark Elder conductor • Sarah Connolly mezzo-soprano
Ripeness with intensity, melancholy with vision: Mahler's beautiful set of songs to Romantic poems by Rückert contains an immense wealth within its compact dimensions. The outstanding Sarah Connolly, who gave a memorable performance of this work with the Hallé in 2006, makes a not-to-be-missed return. This all-Czech programme (Mahler was born in the present-day Czech Republic) is completed by fun items from Smetana's bouncy comedy The Bartered Bride and by Dvorák's Sixth Symphony. The chance to hear this stirring and rapturous piece should be seized, especially with so persuasive a Dvorák enthusiast as Mark Elder conducting.
Thursday 15 November is The Vera Clegg Memorial Concert. |
