Berlioz Three Pieces from The Damnation of Faust 14' HALLÉ FIRST | BRITISH Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.2 in F 20' Rimsky-Korsakov Sheherazade: Symphonic Suite 46'
Yan Pascal Tortelier conductor • John Lill piano
Arabian Nights fantasy in luscious, swirling sound, Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade treats your ears, your emotions and your imagination. Silken princesses, magic and the noble venturer Sinbad - it's all there. Shostakovich's beautiful Second Piano Concerto provides a powerful display of resilience in the face of anxiety - the kind of story John Lill is admirably equipped to unfold, with strength and integrity. Three exciting pieces from Berlioz's great Damnation of Faust honour, in the orchestra's 150th season, its founder Sir Charles Hallé, a great friend of the composer and the man who gave the first British performance of the complete work in 1880. Manchester favourite Yan Pascal Tortelier applies his individual brand of stylish exuberance. |
