With its ceremony, ritual and grandeur, the monarchy has inspired some truly great music. Apart from glorious showpieces for coronations, royal events down the ages have been celebrated in style, prompting Handel's colourful Music for the Royal Fireworks and Water Music. Kings and queens are featured tonight too in the stirring battle music for Henry V and in the theme from the Oscar-winning British blockbuster The Queen. Thrilling and spectacular in its pomp and pageantry but also exquisite and elegant, this programme represents the jewel in the crown of English music and is a fitting anticipation of St. George's Day.
