Mark Elder opens the Hallé Collection with a starry combination. Colin Matthews’s new planet, ‘Pluto’, first shone in the night sky of a Hallé premiere in 2000, immediately becoming a popular addition to the seven astrological movements that make up Holst’s brilliant score. What better way to celebrate the centenary of Sir William Walton’s birth than with Belshazzar’s Feast? His dramatic account of the spectacular fall of Babylon unleashes the full force of the orchestra and choir in a blaze of excitement.
