This evening’s programme, inspired by loss and memory, brings all the colours of the orchestra to music composed originally for piano. Janácek's passionate Diary concerns a young man so infatuated by a gipsy girl that he simply vanished from his family. Ravel’s elegant Tombeau is a touching, Baroque-styled memorial to friends of the composer killed in the war. Colin Matthews brings three more Debussy preludes to vivid orchestral life, including La Danse de Puck. Mussorgsky’s vibrant Pictures represent a tribute to an artist friend, each detailed illustration - including Gnome, Castle, Catacombs and, finally, the Great Gate of Kiev - imaginatively linked by a Promenade.
