The exciting mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, a favourite at New York's Metropolitan Opera, leads a great cast in Mascagni's thriller Cavalleria rusticana. Mark Elder conducts this realistic portrayal of love and jealousy complete with confrontation, challenge, duel and murder. The tension is high, the pace fast and the action dramatic; Easter Sunday will never be the same again for these Sicilian villagers. Apart from the melodious Intermezzo, used in countless advertising campaigns, the opera includes a rollicking testament to the wonders of wine 'Vina il vino' and the famous 'Easter Hymn'. The main theme of Puccini's orchestral work, Capriccio sinfonico, later became a familiar motif in his best-loved opera, La bohème.
