LET'S FACE THE MUSIC ...
Dukas The Sorcerer's Apprentice Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.1 in D flat Janácek Capriccio Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances
Mark Elder conductor Lars Vogt piano
The 22-year-old Prokofiev composed his First Piano Concerto as a vehicle for his own astounding talent, and took listeners by storm with the work's zestful insouciance and dazzling pianistic fireworks. It is played by one of today's brightest pianistic stars, Lars Vogt, admired for his 'high intelligence, physical daring and clarity of vision' (The Times). He also takes the solo part in Janácek's characteristically eccentric and exciting Capriccio for piano (left hand only), flute and brass. Dukas's celebrated scherzo brings the tale of the magician and his mischievous apprentice to vivid life, while Rachmaninov's glorious Symphonic Dances are irresistible in their opulence, virtuosic energy and, in the central waltz, sensuousness.
