LET'S FACE THE MUSIC ...
Debussy orch. Colin Matthews Preludes WORLD PREMIERE Danseuses de Delphes, Général Lavine-eccentric, Ondine Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.1 in F sharp minor Tippett Concerto for Double String Orchestra Bartók The Miraculous Mandarin: Suite
Cristian Mandeal conductor Nikolai Demidenko piano
One of today's greatest pianists, Nikolai Demidenko applies his high-voltage virtuosity to Rachmaninov's First Piano Concerto, a Romantic showpiece. Tippett's fantastically energetic Double Concerto is one of his liveliest works, with bluesy harmonic inflections and surging dance rhythms. As mandarins go, they don't come much more miraculous than in Bartók's thrilling and theatrical score. It is packed with dark and beautiful detail, from the wild opening musical fracas to the rising passion of the last dance. Colin Matthews brings more Debussy Piano Preludes to enchanting orchestral life, including a music-hall artist, a capricious water-nymph and delicate Delphic dancers.
