Sibelius  Symphony No.4 in A minor
Brahms  Symphony No.2 in D

Paavo Berglund  conductor

Now in his mid-seventies, the distinguished conductor Paavo Berglund is widely regarded as the greatest Sibelian of our day. He brings a lifetime of experience to bear on the music of his most famous compatriot, his interpretations always searching, profound, concentrated and, he says, 'from the heart'. The powerfully original Fourth Symphony, whose third movement was played at Sibelius's funeral, depicts an often desolate landscape, half real, half of the mind, in the icy grip of winter. In sharp contrast Brahms's Second Symphony is one of his most amiable and joyful works, sometimes nicknamed 'Pastoral' for its beguiling flow and heart-warming simplicity.
