In the Ring cycle, Act I of Die Walküre stands out as one of the most beautiful and evocative creations in all music-drama; an intimate love-triangle with a difference, where Wagner's great orchestral backdrop carries us through foreboding and menace, recognition and tenderness, to ecstasy. Mark Elder sets the scene with Tannhäuser's glorious Overture and the Venusberg, a scene of endless sin and pleasure.
