Colin Matthews Reflected Images UK PREMIERE Ravel Piano Concerto in G Berlioz Symphonie fantastique
Susanna Mälkki conductor Kathryn Stott piano
From its whipcrack opening to its melodious adagio and glittering, jazzy finale, Ravel's stylish Piano Concerto in G was a favourite with the composer himself. Kathryn Stott is the ever-popular soloist. Berlioz's dazzlingly original Symphonie fantastique really is a fantastic symphony. Bold and brilliant, it depicts a steamy love affair which ends chillingly in nightmarish visions of murder and execution. Colin Matthews has delighted Hallé audiences with his new take on Debussy's Preludes. His recent intriguing orchestral piece Reflected Images, written for San Francisco and receiving its UK premiere tonight, suggests elusive ways of seeing the same image, 'almost as if what is being looked at is seen out of the corner of the eye'.
