Ravel Valses nobles et sentimentales Prokofiev Violin Concerto No.1 in D Vaughan Williams A London Symphony
Cristian Mandeal conductor Isabelle van Keulen violin
Isabelle van Keulen recently made a huge impression with the Hallé and Mark Elder in Manchester and Amsterdam performing Elgar. She returns with Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto, wistful, mysterious and atmospheric. Its gently lyrical hushed moments are enchanting, its puckish scherzo full of mercurial fantasy. Cristian Mandeal, a frequent and popular guest with the Hallé, conducts Ravel's shimmering waltzes, which contain tantalising echoes of Schubert and Johann Strauss. There is no mistaking the location of Vaughan Williams's wonderful London Symphony with its Westminster Chimes, its whiff of 'Lavender Cry' and its evocative instrumental noise and scurry of a buzzing capital.
