LET'S FACE THE MUSIC ...
Sibelius The Dryad Sibelius Symphony No.6 in D minor Grieg Songs with orchestra * Mendelssohn Symphony No.4 in A, 'Italian'
Mark Elder conductor Barbara Bonney soprano
The incomparable Barbara Bonney, one of the world's most accomplished lyric sopranos, returns to the Hallé's Thursday Series with Britten's Les Illuminations. Setting elusive poetry by Rimbaud, this inspired song cycle invokes bells, city life, love and a mysterious 'savage parade'. Mark Elder complements this with Sibelius: the sparse texture and atmospheric melodies of The Dryad conjure the ancient Greek tree-spirit of the title, changing shape from gnarled tree to beautiful, wraith-like girl, and back again. The Sixth, the most polished and perfect of Sibelius's symphonies, is remarkable for its shimmering light and shade and its gently melancholic final pages against which the composer poignantly wrote, 'the shadows lengthen'.
