Wagner  Overture: Rienzi
Elgar  Sea Pictures
Rachmaninov  Symphony No.2 in E minor

Mark Elder  conductor
Jane Irwin  mezzo-soprano*

Mark Elder and one of the outstanding young voices of today - Alice Coote - continue their fruitful artistic partnership in Elgar's haunting and evocative sequence of sea-inspired songs. 'There is no other British mezzo-soprano in her league, nor that many elsewhere in the world' (The Guardian). In the overture to his early grand opera, in which the composer aimed to 'outdo all previous operas with sumptuous extravagance', Wagner whips up a storm of passion and urgency. Few symphonies come anywhere near in popularity to Rachmaninov's Second Symphony whose exquisite Adagio is a great song for orchestra with a long, luscious clarinet solo.
