J.S. Bach St. Matthew Passion
Mark Elder conductor • Carolyn Sampson soprano • Alice Coote mezzo-soprano Timothy Robinson tenor • Nicholas Watts tenor • Robert Gleadow bass-baritone Neal Davies bass • Hallé Choir • Hallé Youth Choir
For Maundy Thursday the Hallé returns to a long-standing tradition by presenting Bach's monumental St. Matthew Passion, sung in English. It was Sir John Barbirolli who re-established performances of this great work with four performances in the 1960s, the last in 1968. This will be more than a concert. Bach addresses his audience as fellow witnesses of events taking place in the here and now: the betrayal, show trial and bloody killing of an innocent victim. But this is indeed a musical performance, too, under Mark Elder, the Hallé Choir and Youth Choir, and an unbeatable team of soloists. Timothy Robinson tells the story, as the Evangelist, and the widely admired young Canadian bass-baritone Robert Gleadow sings Christus.
Please note that Part I will begin at 6pm, followed by an interval of approximately 35 minutes. Part II will begin at 8pm.
