John Adams Slonimsky's Earbox 14' HALLÉ FIRST | WORLD J.S. Bach Piano Concerto in D minor 25' Shostakovich Symphony No.5 in D minor 47'
André de Ridder conductor • Joanna MacGregor piano/director
The exceptional young German, André de Ridder - formerly the Hallé's Assistant Conductor - returns to conduct Shostakovich's powerful Fifth Symphony. This was the work Shostakovich composed as 'a reply to just criticism', at a time when he was first encountering official opposition in Stalin's Russia; his 'reply' took the form of a strong identification with the tradition of Tchaikovsky and Borodin. The always fascinating pianist Joanna MacGregor directs the orchestra from the keyboard in Bach's expressive D minor concerto. And opening the concert comes a modern charmer, John Adams's Slonimsky's Earbox, a study of strange, wonderful and sumptuous orchestral harmonies.
