Debussy Prélude ŕ l'aprčs-midi d'un faune 10' Bartók Piano Concerto No.2 in G 28' Elgar Symphony No.1 in A flat 53' HALLÉ FIRST | WORLD
Mark Elder conductor • András Schiff piano
Bringing this series to a magnificent conclusion, we welcome the distinguished Hungarian pianist, András Schiff, renowned for his lucid and compelling artistry, on an eagerly anticipated visit to this country for his first appearance with the Hallé. He applies his virtuoso talent to a work by his fellow Hungarian, Bartók: the most streamlined and brilliant of his three piano concertos which the composer wrote for himself to play at a time of bounding confidence. Finally one of the Hallé's most celebrated children, Elgar's glorious First Symphony, whose triumphant premiere in Manchester helped establish it as 'the noblest ever penned for instruments by an English composer'. One hundred years later, the Hallé under Elder has made this work its own again: 'I doubt if it were ever played better than it is here by the rejuvenated orchestra, nor interpreted with such profound understanding by any of Mark Elder's predecessors.' (The Sunday Times on the Hallé's recording of Elgar's Symphony No.1.)
