Rebel Les Élémens 10' Beethoven Triple Concerto in C for piano, violin and cello 26' Haydn The Creation: The Representation of Chaos 7' Stravinsky The Rite of Spring 35'
Markus Stenz conductor | Paul Barritt violin Nicholas Trygstad cello | Jonathan Scott piano
Markus Stenz promises chaos presented with perfect order, from the portrayal of the elements, musically illustrated with picture-book vividness by the French Baroque composer Jean-Féry Rebel, to the still startling opening of Haydn's masterpiece The Creation. Bold use of orchestral colour, adventurous harmony and exceptional rhythmic and melodic inventiveness represent the pre-creation chaos of the earth 'without form and void'. And from much the same kind of barren earth springs one of the concert hall's most visceral orchestral showpieces. Paganism, brutal passion and human sacrifice provide the stirring backdrop to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. It pushed at the boundaries of beauty and harmony, contributing to the scandal at the ballet's notorious premiere. Beethoven's radiant and exhilarating Triple Concerto, features two of the Hallé's own principal players.
