Thursday 25 October 2007, 7.30pm PRE-CONCERT EVENT AT 6.15PM
Beethoven Wellington's Victory Over Napoleon 16' Schubert Symphony No.4 in C minor, 'Tragic' 28' R. Strauss Don Quixote 38'
Cristian Mandeal conductor • Miklós Perényi cello
Beethoven's noisy depiction of the Battle of Vitoria (1813), the conflict that ended Napoleonic rule in Spain, was hugely popular in its time, but now its cannonades and celebrations are rarely heard in the concert hall. Yet the work throws an unusual light on the composer's enthusiasm for liberty. The orchestra's eminent Principal Guest Conductor also presents Schubert's moving 'Tragic' Symphony and Richard Strauss's engaging and pictorial telling of the story of Don Quixote in the form of a cello concerto. As the quixotic hero - dreamer and loveable eccentric - we welcome the return of the distinguished cellist, Miklós Perényi. |
