Bartók Divertimento 22' Dvorák Violin Concerto in A minor 32' Mendelssohn Symphony No.4 in A, 'Italian' 30'
Thomas Zehetmair director/violin
Thomas Zehetmair will be familiar to Hallé audiences not only as one of the most electrifying violinists around but also as an equally persuasive conductor (who featured in the Shostakovich festival in 2005-06). Here he directs the orchestra in Mendelssohn's sunny 'Italian' Symphony and in a more overcast musical landscape: Bartók's Divertimento for strings, taut and bittersweet music composed with the Second World War looming. In between, Zehetmair turns from baton to bow to take the solo part in one of the great violin concertos, Dvorák's, with its stirring first movement, sweetly contemplative Adagio and folkdance finale.
