Thursday 7 February 2008, 7.30pm PRE-CONCERT EVENT AT 6.30PM
Walton Partita 16' HALLÉ FIRST | BRITISH Prokofiev Violin Concerto No.2 in G minor 25' Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5 in E minor 47' HALLÉ FIRST | BRITISH
Cristian Mandeal conductor • Lyn Fletcher violin
Two more works from the Hallé's history of premieres are included in the eloquent Cristian Mandeal's second programme of the season: Walton himself conducted the Hallé in the first UK performance of his ebullient and tuneful Partita, written in 1957, and when Charles Hallé conducted his orchestra in Tchaikovsky's splendidly affirmative Fifth Symphony in 1893, it was the first time any Tchaikovsky symphony had been heard on these shores. Prokofiev - a great film composer, like Walton, and a great Russian, like Tchaikovsky - is represented by his Second Violin Concerto, a work of dark power and beguiling beauty which he wrote just before his ballet Romeo and Juliet. Lyn Fletcher moves from her desk as the orchestra's highly respected leader into the spotlight as soloist.
