Beethoven - Symphony No.5 in C minor, Op.67

Richard Strauss’s playful, glorious and rip-roaring Don Juan is a superb opener – a tone poem about the legendary fictional libertine. A series of colourful episodes, each representing the Don’s seductions and triumphs, ends with his demise when he is slain. Following this is the virtuosic Violin Concerto of Jean Sibelius, which is considered exhilarating and symphonic in scope.

The concert ends with a work that needs almost no introduction, and yet Beethoven’s Fifth is so much more than its universally-recognised first four notes. Its finale can lift the roof off any concert hall!
