Grieg - Peer Gynt Suite: Selection
Strauss R - Horn Concerto No.1
Sibelius - Symphony No.2
Laurence Rogers, horn
A selection from Grieg’s well-known music for Peer Gynt, including Morning and In the Hall of the Mountain King, sets us on track for an evening of ‘Big tunes & Big sounds’. The second symphony of Sibelius is full of gloriously passionate music, written at a time when Finland was seeking freedom from its Russian overlords. The composer called the work ‘a confession of the soul’. Sandwiched between this Scandinavian feast is teenager Richard Strauss’s birthday present for his father’s 60th birthday: not just a present to listen to but also to play, as his father was a professional horn player.
