The Science of Sound workshop is designed around the Key Stage 2 Science Curriculum and will introduce pupils to the fundamental processes used to create noise, and therefore music. Sessions are led by four Hallé musicians, one player from each of the orchestral families of instruments, who will work with a whole year group.

Recommended for Years 3-6

For the first part of the workshop, the musicians will demonstrate their instrument, discussing how it makes a noise and how it is different from the other instruments. They will then explain the science behind the noise production, discussing vibrations (how sound travels), volume (loud/quiet), pitch (frequency) and why different materials make slightly different sounds. The second part of the session will involve the children splitting into four groups to each work with one of the musicians to create their own short musical composition using their newfound knowledge of sound.
