Hallé Choir in Manchester
Founded alongside the Orchestra by Sir Charles Halle in 1858, the Hallé Choir usually gives around 15 concerts a year, as well as featuring regularly on the Hallé’s multi-award-winning CD label.
Recent highlights included featuring in the Hallé’s Beethoven 250 celebrations in early 2020, a concert performance of Act 2 of Fidelio, Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust (both in Manchester and at the Edinburgh International Festival), and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and Act 3 of Wagner’s Parsifal in York Minster. In 2019 the Choir toured to Spain, where it gave two concerts with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon and an a cappella concert of English music. The Choir performs regularly at the BBC Proms, and last season it performed Tippett’s A Child of Our Time in Sheffield and Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’ Symphony in Nottingham.
Made up of 170 singers from all over the North-West and from all walks of life, the Hallé Choir offers a range of additional activities, including individual coaching and social events, as well as regular rehearsals.
When the UK arts scene was shut down in March 2020, it did not stop the Hallé Choir from singing. Rehearsals moved online and the Choir began to rehearse every chorus in Handel’s Messiah, before creating a virtual choir performance of Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt by Beethoven. September saw the return of socially-distanced, in-person rehearsals until they were forced back online. Choir members were thrilled that restrictions were eased, enabling them to take part in the Hallé’s Christmas concert in person.
Joining the Hallé Choir
How do I join?
We have a rolling programme of auditions throughout the season. If you would like to register your interest for an audition please apply using the link provided:
When are the next audition dates?
Register using the above application form and you’ll be informed about the next available audition date.
Where and when are rehearsals held?
The choir rehearses on a Wednesday evening from 6.45pm – 9.15pm at Hallé St. Peter’s in Ancoats, 40 Blossom Street, Ancoats M4 6BF
Occasionally additional rehearsals are scheduled on another evening, especially in the week of the concert.
What is the commitment involved in being a member?
We expect an 80% minimum attendance from our members, for each concert and overall during the season. We have an option of a ‘leave of absence’ period of a few months if necessary for any reason, without the need to re-audition to rejoin.
What would I have to do for an audition?
Auditions last around 10 minutes, and you would be asked to sing:
- A piece of your own choice lasting no more than 3 minutes. This should be a piece that you know well and feel confident singing, and can be either a solo piece or part of a choral work. We will provide an accompanist for you
- Vocal range exercises, ear and responsiveness tests
- A short piece of accompanied sight reading
What does membership cost?
There is a guideline annual membership donation – currently £18 per month. All other costs such as vocal coaching, rehearsal, concert and music costs are provided.
What if I am a student?
We welcome students. Singers in full-time education will not be expected to donate but will need to pay a refundable music deposit of £20.
We also run a Choral Scholarship programme, all the info you need below:
Do I need to be able to read music?
As we have a limited amount of rehearsal time for each project, it is necessary for all Choir members to be able to read music.
May I observe or sing in a rehearsal before I audition?
We strongly encourage prospective new members to attend a rehearsal, either to observe or sing with the Choir, and thereby experience the Choir before deciding whether or not to audition. Please contact the Hallé Choir Administrator to register your interest.
