Hallé Choir in Manchester
The Hallé Choir was founded alongside the Orchestra in 1858 by Sir Charles Hallé. The Choir gives around 15 concerts a year at The Bridgewater Hall and at other venues across the UK, appearing with internationally renowned conductors and soloists together with the Hallé and other notable ensembles.
As well as familiar choral repertoire, the Hallé Choir also enjoys a reputation for tackling more unusual works. Recent highlights have included a rare performance of Schoenberg’s gigantic Gurrelieder in Manchester, Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust at the Edinburgh International Festival, and in Manchester, and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius in York Minster, and Wagner’s Parsifal, as part of the Ryedale Festival. In 2019 it toured to Valladolid in Spain where it gave two concerts with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, and an a cappella concert of varied English music.
The Choir performs regularly at the BBC Proms with the Hallé orchestra, with Debussy’s La Demoiselle Elue, alongside the Halle Youth Choir in 2018, and in previous years singing Elgar’s The Apostles and Vaughan Williams’ Sancta Civitas, as well as Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the BBC Philharmonic. In the UK it performed in Sheffield with Tippett’s A Child of our Time and performed Mahler’s inspirational Symphony No.2 at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall in 2018. In the 2019-20 season the choir will perform in two concerts in the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, and will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, ‘Choral‘ in the Barbican and in The Sage Gateshead.
Since 2003 the Hallé Choir has featured regularly on the Hallé’s own CD label which has won numerous awards, including the three Gramophone Choral Awards and a Gramophone Opera Award.
The Hallé Choir is made up of 170 singers from all over the North-West of England and from all walks of life. Meeting to rehearse regularly in Manchester, the Choir offers a range of activities, including individual vocal coaching, sectional and full choir rehearsals, as well as social events.

Where and when are rehearsals held?
The choir rehearses on a Wednesday evening from 6.45pm – 9.15pm at Hallé St. Peter’s in Ancoats, 40 Blossom Street, Ancoats M4 6BF
Occasionally additional rehearsals are scheduled on another evening, especially in the week of the concert.
What is the commitment involved in being a member?
We expect an 80% minimum attendance from our members, for each concert and overall during the season. We have an option of a ‘leave of absence’ period of a few months if necessary for any reason, without the need to re-audition to rejoin.
What would I have to do for an audition?
Auditions last around 10 minutes, and you would be asked to sing:
- A piece of your own choice lasting no more than 3 minutes. This should be a piece that you know well and feel confident singing, and can be either a solo piece or part of a choral work. We will provide an accompanist for you
- Vocal range exercises, ear and responsiveness tests
- A short piece of accompanied sight reading
What does membership cost?
There is a guideline annual membership donation – currently £18 per month. All other costs such as vocal coaching, rehearsal, concert and music costs are provided.
What if I am a student?
We welcome students. Singers in full-time education will not be expected to donate but will need to pay a refundable music deposit of £20.
We also run a Choral Scholarship programme, all the info you need below:
Do I need to be able to read music?
As we have a limited amount of rehearsal time for each project, it is necessary for all Choir members to be able to read music.
May I observe or sing in a rehearsal before I audition?
We strongly encourage prospective new members to attend a rehearsal, either to observe or sing with the Choir, and thereby experience the Choir before deciding whether or not to audition. Please contact the Hallé Choir Administrator to register your interest.
