Winner of the Hallé Corporate Choir Competition 2018 is…

24th November 2018

The Hallé are delighted to announce that the PwC choir, with their conductor Ellie Slorach, have been crowned winners of the 2018 Hallé Corporate Choir Competition.

The event, which took place at The Stoller Hall at Chetham’s School of Music on the afternoon of Friday 23 November, featured eight choirs from businesses and organisations across the North West. Each choir was paired with a professional choral conductor, with whom they rehearsed a repertoire of two Christmas-themed songs over the course of five sessions leading up to their final performance during the competition.

Seasoned veterans, PwC have been involved in the Hallé Corporate Choir Competition since the programme began in 2013 and now have a choir that runs year-round. They are the first choir to have won the Competition multiple times, having been named champions in 2013 and 2016 in addition to this year.

Annie Hilton, member of the PwC choir, said: “We had an absolutely fantastic afternoon at the Hallé Corporate Choir Competition! It was a real joy to come together with all of the other choirs to showcase all of the hard work we each have put in during rehearsals over the past weeks. We were so thrilled to win the competition, and it has really put a spring in our step! We are incredibly excited to get to perform to the audience at The Bridgewater Hall with the Halle on 21 December.”

The TransPennine Express choir and Siemens choir were also honoured during the Competition, winning the Sir Charles Hallé and Sir Mark Elder awards respectively. These are special awards given at the judge’s discretion given for outstanding contributions from choirs taking part. In the 2018 iteration of the competition, the awards were granted to the second and third place contestants.

Caron Eastwood, member of the Siemens choir, said:  “Siemens love singing at all our performances but the Hallé Corporate Competition is the highlight to the end of the year! All the choirs work so hard to perfect their performances, and the nerves and adrenaline are running high which makes it so exciting.”

Caron continued: “We love our choir and look forward to our practices every other week, you forget all the other things going on in your working or personal life and just relax and sing! For me it’s the best thing about work!”

Also competing this year were entrants from BAE Systems, DLA Piper, The Nightingale and Genesis Prevention Centre (part of South Manchester Hospital), Together and Wood plc, who entered for the very first time.

Matthew Hamilton, Hallé Choral Director and Corporate Choir Competition Judge said: “Once again the competition exceeded all of our expectations in terms of the quality of performances from all of the choirs taking part. We have been hugely impressed with the standard this year. It is terrific to see how returning choirs have developed their vocal talent, while so many brand new singers took to the stage.”

Hamilton continues: “It was an afternoon of pure joy and fantastic to hear so many people getting such pleasure from singing together!”

As winners, the PwC choir will now perform in the Hallé Christmas Extravaganza concert alongside the Hallé at The Bridgewater Hall on Friday 21 December.
