Last Season

The dark hand of fate had a firm grip on our 2015-16 season, with Sir Mark Elder and an impressive list of guest artists exploring one of the most powerful musical themes.

Rimsky-Korsakov, Verdi and Mahler featured in the opening three programmes, each concert conducted by Sir Mark, and all examining fate and its consequences. Scheherazade’s valiant attempt to escape her own seemingly inevitable demise, Verdi’s tumultuous Requiem and Mahler’s schizophrenic Sixth Symphony set the scene.

We were delighted to welcome Ryan Wigglesworth in his debut season as Principal Guest Conductor. He began with the UK premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Piano Concerto and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Later programmes included Tchaikovsky’s ‘Little Russian’ and Ryan taking the solo part in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.19. His Manchester season appearances ended in April 2016 with Schumann’s ‘Rhenish’ Symphony and Bach’s Magnificat in D.

An impressive list of visiting artists included Jack Liebeck playing Dvorák’s Violin Concerto, Nikolaj Znaider conducting Jian Wang performing in Bloch’s ‘Schelomo’ with the cello giving voice to King Solomon, and Cristian Macelaru conducting Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Poulenc’s Gloria.
