Matthew Roughley
Hallé Youth Choir Assistant Director, Ancoats Community Choir Assistant Director, Workplace Choir Conductor
Matthew is a Manchester based freelance conductor, educator and workshop leader working across the UK. He began to work with the Hallé in 2015 when he was appointed as Assistant Director of the Hallé Children’s Choir and since then has worked in a number of different roles. The following year, in 2016 he began and continues to work with the Hallé Ancoats Community Choir as well as taking up the position as Assistant Director with the Hallé Youth Choir in 2019.
Matthew’s reputation for his engaging style has led him to work with choirs and singers for some of the UK’s leading musical organisations including the Hallé, Opera North, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Voices Foundation and SFP.
As a conductor, Matthew works with many choirs on a regular basis. He is the founder and musical director of Manchester Vocal Ensemble, musical director of N-Choir, conductor of BDO Choir and was the assistant conductor of the Opera North Youth Ensembles between 2017-19.
A specialist in music education and accessibility, Matthew has led the choral activity on Opera North’s award winning In Harmony programme as well as working closely with The Voices Foundation as a choral expert, training music leaders across the UK.
In November 2019, Matthew’s ‘BDO Choir’ claimed first place and became first time winners of the Hallé Corporate Choir competition.
