SOUNDBLOCKS by David Hext

3rd March 2021

Members of the Hallé percussion section perform SOUND BLOCKS, composed by David Hext.

David Hext on SOUNDBLOCKS:

‘SOUND BLOCKS was written in 1998 for my pupils at the Chethams School of Music in Manchester. I’ve adapted it during lockdown to accommodate whatever gear we in the Hallé percussion section happened to have at home. I have to use a saucepan at one point! The idea of the piece is to demonstrate the different materials from which our instruments are made. So we start with wood, then on to skin, then metal, and finally a coda section which combines all three.’
