Hallé Youth Choir
Established in 2003, the Hallé Youth Choir is recognised as one of the country’s leading mixed-voice youth choirs. Rehearsing on Sunday afternoons during term-time, membership is for talented young singers, aged 13-19 years, across the North West region. As well as appearing with the Hallé and a variety of other ensembles, the Youth Choir also performs independently. Each summer, members enjoy a residential course and tour with visits in recent years to Italy, Dublin, Belgium, Scotland,Paris and London
The Youth Choir’s 18-19 season features two performances in the Hallé’s ‘Pops’ series of concerts, joining Darth Vader in the Music of Star Wars in September and travelling to Hogwarts in the Music of Harry Potter in February. The Youth Choir are a regular feature choir in the celebrated Hallé Carol Concerts in December and they will also be popping in the local Christmas Markets to spread some festive cheer. . The upper voices of the Hallé Youth Choir will be performing alongside members of the Hallé Choir in Debussy’s Nocturnes: Sirenes under the baton of Sir Mark Elder in concerts at the Bridgewater Hall and Nottingham. Other performances i include the annual Hallé Ensembles matinee performance, a visit to St Helen’s Church in Northwich and a joint tour to the Costa Brava with the Hallé Youth Orchestra in July.
Since its creation the Youth Choir has covered a wide range of diverse repertoire. Recent highlights have included performing alongside the Hallé and the Hallé Choir in Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius as part of the Ryedale Festival at York Minster, , a performance of Debussy’s La Damoiselle Elue with the Hallé at the BBC Proms in July 2018 and a live television appearance alongside Northern Irish band Snow Patrol on BBC1 for ‘Sports Relief’. In May 2018, the Hallé Youth Choir was honoured to be part of the National Memorial Service to commemorate the first anniversary of the Manchester Arena Terror Attack, performing Somewhere over the Rainbow at Manchester Cathedral. HRH the Duke of Cambridge, the Prime Minister and bereaved families were amongst those that attended.
The Youth Choir has taken part in several recording projects on the Hallé’s own label including A Christmas Celebration, Colin Matthews’ Crossing the Alps and the Gramophone award-winning recording of Elgar’s The Apostles. The Youth Choir sang on Elbow’s album ‘Build a rocket boys’ and subsequently performed with the Manchester band on ‘Comic Relief’ and ‘Later … with Jools Holland’. In April 2018, the Youth Choir recorded on Mercury Prize-nominated-artist C Ducan’s long-awaited third album, which is due for release in February 2019.

Application for the 2019-20 will open on 21 December 2018.

Hallé Youth Choir membership is for talented young singers aged 13 to 19 years who feel confident at reading music and love the excitement of contributing to a choir.
Members are expected to commit to rehearsals on Sunday afternoons in Manchester during the autumn and spring terms from September 2018. There are no activities during the study leave period of May and June. Youth Choir members are also expected to attend a residential course and/or tour during the summer holidays of 2019.
Membership is free, however all members will be requested to make a voluntary donation to the Hallé as a contribution towards the core costs of maintaining the choir. Members are also expected to contribute towards the cost of residential courses and tours where appropriate.
Limited bursaries are available through an application process to help cover the costs of residential courses, tours and travel to rehearsals and concerts. The Hallé is grateful to the Oglesby Charitable Trust for the bursary fund.
