In a varied and entertaining programme, Hallé brass players explore a theme of song and dance, including Equale Dances by that doyen among composers of brass music, Edward Gregson, where lively dances offset lyrical arias. Celebrating Cecilia’s McDowall’s 70th birthday year, her Tango Oscuro is an evocation of dark memories of an old Argentinian tango hall. From its origins as music for an airline company advert, Sir Karl Jenkins’s Adiemus, mixing African tribal and Celtic-like melodies, has become a global phenomenon.
