Continuing the Hallé’s celebration of Vaughan Williams’s birth 150 years ago, string players from the orchestra perform his Phantasy Quintet, a work of his early maturity demonstrating his indebtedness to the legacy of both English folksong and Tudor and Jacobean sacred choral music. Mozart’s late string quintets represent the apogee of his chamber music achievements: in its ambition of scale, the C major Quintet is worthy of a place among Mozart’s greatest instrumental compositions like his final trio of symphonies.
