The art of counterpoint – the way composers combine simultaneous melodic lines – is celebrated in works from different eras, each paying homage to J. S. Bach. Sofia Gubaidulina’s quartet provides an taster to her powerful Offertorium, itself growing out of a Bach quotation, which the Hallé plays on 30 September. Alongside his performances of Ravel with the Hallé, Benjamin Grosvenor joins a trio of the players for Schumann’s glorious Piano Quartet, its slow movement theme one of the sublime inspirations of early Romanticism.
Tickets are bookable either through skiddle.com or by ringing The Bridgewater Hall box office on 0161 907 9000.
